Temperature Probe Types

Share post:

Temperature probes are more common than you may realize. They are in kitchens, hospitals, and a litany of other places. Getting a Temperature Probe reading plays an important role in several applications and they need to be accurate.

What you may not have known is just how many different temperature probe types there are. Let’s get into the different temperature probe types and what it might look like trying to use one.

RTD Temperature Probe

A common type of temperature probe is the Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD). The RTD probe uses electrical resistance in order to properly measure temperature. Probe temperature measuring tools like these are found in the medical field, industrial sector, and elsewhere. They are especially great for industrial applications like temperature calibration, process control and monitoring, and more.

RTD probes are known for having high stability, repeatability, and accuracy. That makes them an ideal choice when it comes to applications that require precise temperature control. There is a diamond-shaped circuit that compares the unknown resistance to a known resistance. The two arms of the bridge then balance the resistance to produce what is known as zero output. This design type provides very accurate measurements and is great for scientific and industrial applications where precision is of the utmost importance.

NTC Temperature Probe

There is also the Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) probe. These use a thermistor in order to properly measure temperature. When temperature rises, the resistance of this component will ultimately go down. Changes in resistance are what are used for measuring temperature with this probe.

These probes are great for a wide range of applications. That can include temperature monitoring, temperature compensation, and temperature control, among other things. NTC probes are great because they have great sensitivity and a fast response time while also being very affordable. The cost alone makes them an affordable choice. Just be sure that you know which material and B Value you need before choosing an NTC temperature probe or you may not get the right fit.

The third and final kind of temperature probe to be aware of is the thermocouple. Thermocouples are a combination of two wires, each of which is made of different metals. The size of that induced voltage is what can be used to determine the overall temperature.

Thermocouples are great because they can be used for a wide temperature range. Great precision and accuracy, fast response times, and ease of use mean that thermocouples are great to use in a huge array of applications. They can be used in food temperature, healthcare, and industrial settings, among others.

Choosing a thermocouple comes down to a few factors. The first is the type. There are several different thermocouple types out there, the most common being Type K, Type J, Type T, Type N, and Type E. They also have different temperature ranges to be aware of. The junction style and sheath material are important as well, so know the differences there.

How They Work

Temperature probes generally work by sensing something that it is in contact with. There is a change to the characteristics of that environment or object, and sensing elements will respond to a change in overall temperature.

The probe has a contact sensor within that makes physical contact with the surface in question. The probe is connected to a readout device, which converts the reading into something that can be read quickly and easily. It takes no time at all to garner a reading.
